One part of being a responsible property owner is knowing where your property’s septic tank is, so that you can access it quickly if anything happens. If you are unsure of your septic tank’s location, there are a few tricks that you can use to try and find it. Follow our tips to see if you can discover where it is.
Follow The Sewer Pipes
Locate where the piping from your home or business begins to go underground. These sewer lines take the waste from drains at your property on one end and send it through to the septic tank on the other end. They run in a straight line, so your septic tank location will be subterranean along the same route, anywhere from 5 to 25 feet from the edge of the building. If you see any depressions in the ground or dead or wet grass along the line, that may indicate the spot above where the tank is.
Septic Tank Locator Tool + Digging
You can also try to use a metal detector to find the septic tank, as it is reinforced with steel bars. Take the tool and run it along the yard of your property. If there are arrows anywhere left by prior owners or contractors, that tells you which direction to be looking. Once you think you have figure out where it is, you can use a piece of rebar to test it and be sure without having to dig up a big hole. Hammer it down up to four feet to see if you reach the septic tank.
Look Through Records
There might be building permit records that state where your property’s septic tank is located. Check with your county or with your real estate agent or the building’s prior owner to see if they have any diagrams of your plumbing system. You can also ask local construction and plumbing companies if they were the ones to install it or if they have records of ever having serviced it.
