Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes For City Water / Sewer vs Septic System

If You’re on City Water & City Sewer

  • Help keep cold spaces warm. Open up kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to circulate warm air around the plumbing.
  • It’s a matter of OPINION here based on the unknow condition of the city sewer line. Let cold water drip lightly from the faucet at a trickle. Make sure you monitor the sink you are running water from to make sure it is draining faster than you are adding water to it. Never leave your home unattended with dripping faucets. Also, check throughout the night.
  • Keep thermostats at a constant temperature all the time.
  • If you chose to use electric portable heaters, DO NOT leave them unattended. If using diesel or gas appliances or power generators, follow the manufacturer specifications for proper use. Please be aware of possible carbon monoxide hazards.
  • We strongly recommend all homes have an operating carbon monoxide detector. Contact your local Fire Department for any additional guidance.
  • Know where you Main Water Supply turn OFF is located.

If you pipes DO FREEZE – Immediately turn off the main water supply.

If You’re on Private Septic

  • Help keep cold spaces warm. Open up kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to circulate warm air around the plumbing.
  • It’s a matter of OPINION here based on the unknown condition of the home’s septic system. If you decide to let cold water lightly drip from the faucet, keep it at a very light trickle. Make sure you monitor the sink you are running water from to make sure it is draining faster than you are adding water to it. Excessive water going into your septic system could cause a sewer back-up as well. Never leave your home unattended with dripping faucets. Also, check throughout the night.
  • Know exactly where your septic tank cover is if it needs to be accessed.
