If you’re new to living on a septic system or you haven’t heard yet, there are several easy things you can do to help that system work better. Use these tips and tricks to keep your system working efficiently and to help it last for a long, long time.
As always, if you need help caring for your septic system, contact us at Rowell’s Services for septic services in New Hampshire. We would be happy to help you get your system in top shape.
The more water you use, the more water ends up in your septic system and the more work that system has to do. If you can save even a little bit of water, that’s also saving wear and tear on your septic system. Water-saving ideas include:
Install high-efficiency toilets.
Use faucet aerators and high-efficiency showerheads.
Select the proper load size on your washing machine each time you use it.
You may also want to schedule tasks that use a lot of water on different days so that your system isn’t processing all that water on one day each week. This can save on system overload.
Dispose of Waste the Right Way
Many people put things down the toilet that don’t belong there. All of these make life harder for your septic system. The only things that should go down your toilet are the water that is in it and human waste.
Similarly, don’t put chemicals into your system that don’t belong there. Your septic system contains living organisms that help dispose of your waste. Chemical drain cleaners, paint, oil, grease, and more can kill these and cause system disruptions.
Maintain Your Drainfield
The drainfield is where the water that drains from your septic system goes. Take care of it so that it will last for a long time. Don’t drive or park on it, keep rainwater drainage systems away from it, and make sure you plant far enough away that roots won’t get into your septic system.
Pump it Out Regularly
Regular septic pumping in New Hampshire is key to maintaining your septic system. Most systems need pumping every three to five years though it will depend on how many people live in your home and how large your tank is. Missed pumpings can cause major overload on your system and eventually it will fail.
Get it Inspected
Get your system inspected by a professional roughly every 3 years. This will allow you to find problems before they become major issues and determine how often to pump out your tank. Additionally, if you need sewer repair in New Hampshire, we can determine what work needs done, then do it. Inspectors can also check key components of the system, like pumps, float switches, and more.

I was able to book a plumbing appointment within a few days, and the plumbers who showed up were fantastic. They knew their stuff, were super personable, offered great advice, and ended up only charging the dispatch fee after determining the issue was not actually with the plumbing. I will…
